May 21, 2026Winter in Central Oregon is made for Nordic skiing, and Sunriver is the perfect basecamp for exploring some of the region’s best groomed trails. From the scenic alpine routes at Mt. Bachelor to quiet forest loops just minutes from town, there are incredible cross-country ski options for every level.
1. Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center
If you want perfect grooming and endless trail options, this is the place.
The Nordic Center at Mt. Bachelor offers one of the largest groomed trail systems in the country with over 50 km of groomed trails. The routes wind through old-growth forests with occasional views of the Cascade peaks.

- Reliable snow all winter
Favorite trails to try:
- Todd Lake Loop – scenic and moderate
- Dutchman Flat – wide open with mountain views

2. Virginia Meissner Sno-Park
Locals love Meissner for its beautiful forested trails and relaxed vibe. The grooming here is excellent thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Meissner Nordic community.
Highlights:
- Quiet forest skiing
- Excellent intermediate terrain
- Beautiful snow-covered ponderosa forests
Favorite trails:
- Tangent Loop
- Meissner Loop
- Nordic Shelter trail
There’s also a warming hut and occasional community ski events, which makes it feel very welcoming.
3. Swampy Lakes Sno-Park
If you want big views and fewer crowds, Swampy Lakes is a fantastic option.
The trail system sits higher in elevation and often has great snow conditions even late in the season.
Why it’s great:
- Beautiful Cascade views
- Quiet trails
- Good variety of terrain
Favorite route:
- Swampy Loop – a classic Central Oregon Nordic tour.
4. Wanoga Sno-Park
Wanoga is often overlooked for Nordic skiing because it’s famous for snowmobiling, but there are some great groomed ski routes here as well.
What you’ll find:
- Wide groomed corridors
- Rolling terrain
- Access to longer backcountry tours
This is a fun place if you want a long workout ski.
5. Sunriver Nordic Center
Sometimes the best ski days are the easiest ones.
The Sunriver Nordic Center offers about 20 km of groomed trails that wind through open meadows and forest. It’s a great option when you want a relaxed ski without driving up the mountain.
Best for:
- Beginners
- Families
- Quick morning skis
Plus, the views of the Cascade peaks at sunset can be incredible.
